Crossroads of the continent, Indigenous pathways, the story of the American West: this is Wyoming’s Red Desert – reportedly the largest unfenced area in the lower-48, home to a rare desert elk herd, largest living sand dunes complex in North America, and a scenic wild land of buttes and colorful formations that showcase our American western history. This road tour and hike will visit Indigenous, pioneer and frontier trails and sites and includes a guided hike through the Honeycomb Buttes wilderness study area by desert-rat legend John Mionczynski.
Bring a day pack with an assortment of layers for being outside and hiking in cool, windy, dusty, sunny or hot weather. (Check the weather in advance.) Sunglasses/visor hat suggested. Bring a filled-up water bottle. We’ll have extra water and snacks. Sneakers are fine for footwear, but sandals are discouraged – due to prickly pear cactus. Binoculars are recommended, as we’ll be sure to see pronghorn antelope, wild horses, and probably elk. If participants have their own 4WD high-clearance vehicle that they are comfortable driving, they may use it.
